The Barber, Bilk and Ballstars play music by Chris Barber, Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball plus Terry Lightfoot, Alex Welsh, Humphrey Lyttelton and more!  Before The Beatles Britain was Trad mad and this afternoon’s concert celebrates the music of the late ’50s and early ’60s when the sound of early jazz was adapted to make a uniquely British style.  The seven-piece band led by trombonist Ian Bateman features a group of musicians who worked extensively with the big stars of the Trad era and continue to keep the music alive with their superb playing and sheer love of the music.

The Jazz Repertory Company’s second Swingin’ With Strings concert sees the return of Claire Martin OBE for the launch of her new album Songs and Stories – her first-time collaboration with Jazz Repertory Company regular Callum Au.  The combination of Claire’s wonderful singing, Callum’s delightful arrangements and the superb playing of the 50-piece orchestra promises another memorable evening of swinging musical magic.

To welcome the 2020s we return to the Jazz Age of a century before and the magnificent music that accompanied the Prohibition Era. For this concert we celebrate five of the biggest names in the jazz and blues of the 1920s – Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Bessie Smith and Bix Beiderbecke.  We’re delighted to feature the world’s greatest exponent of Bix style cornet, Chicago’s Andy Schumm and the renowned pianist and vintage jazz expert Keith Nichols is our Musical Director.

Music from Antonio Carlos Jobim with Frank Sinatra, Doris Day’s Latin for Lovers and  Stan Getz’s wonderful 1962 album Focus featuring string arrangements by Eddie Sauter.  Iain Mackenzie returns in the role of Frank Sinatra and is joined by Brazilian singer guitarist Gui Tavaras as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Georgina Jackson sings Doris Day, Mark Crooks recreates Stan Getz and it’s all accompanied by a Big Band plus 22 sumptuous strings.
